Two people in critical conditions after overdosing on ecstasy during Perth New Year's Eve celebrations

"TWO people remain in critical condition after overdosing on ecstasy, however the people of Perth were otherwise well-behaved as they welcomed in 2017.

Speaking to PerthNow at 10pm last night, St John Ambulance general manager James Sherriff said there had been 500 cases so far that day, with 50 cases involving drugs and alcohol.

He said a man and woman aged in their 20s were rushed to hospital after taking ecstasy.

The medical emergencies came after police and other authorities had warned of dangerous drugs that takers mistakenly believed to be ecstasy.

"Police have been speaking about [new mixable synthetic drugs] the last few days, we've seen it on the road... these are young lives," Mr Sherriff said.

He said the pair were in a critical condition.

Mr Sherriff said two people in Rockingham were also taken to hospital when the boat they were in overturned.

"It's been pretty quiet this year, it hasn't gone crazy," he said.

He said there had been no major road accidents on New Year's Eve."
